Not being able to walk freely anytime in broad daylight is a huge hassle for a vampire. Merrick knows that while her kind can still go out during the morning, it would only be for a limited time and the act itself would be more of a painful ordeal than a simple task. Sunlight hurts vampire skin, which was the reason why she and her fellow creatures of the night spend the early hours indoors, away from that dreadful light.
The architect had spent today reading through her college textbooks, studying for a test two days from now. Most college students would choose to cram, but Merrick knew better. She may already know most of what was written in the pages of her books, but it does not hurt to review them every now and then. The hours ticked by until the sun has disappeared over the horizon. Time was merely a concept now to the vampire; she did not notice how long she had been poring over her books until she looked up and saw the clock by her study table. She pinches the bridge of her nose after she took off her reading glasses, letting the strain ease down for a while.
What can actually help in soothing the nerves and calming a person down? Technically, Merrick was not like any other person, though she can still survive on normal food. Blood was their main source of nourishment, but after getting her fill from a blood delivery just yesterday, the woman was not worried about going into a blind bloodlust. She once more checked the watch on her wrist and looked outside. Most of the stores might be closing now, but she hopes the one she had in mind was still open at this hour. The woman made a few stretches with her arms before she suddenly sprang up from her chair in a graceful somersault in mid-air, her form shrinking quicker than the eye can perceive until she transformed into a large bat before she can even land on the floor. The creature flapped her wings and soon swooped out of an open window, flying towards her intended destination.
The night was cold, the wind cool upon Merrick’s bat face as she flew above the town she lived in. It was easier to navigate with the full moon out, not that it was any harder without it anyway. Traveling in this form was faster; knowing that she needed to be quick or else she might not catch this particular shop open. She could have run with the use of her inhuman speed, but she would rather not draw attention to herself. Finally, when she was within the near vicinity of her destination, the vampire chose to duck in a dark alley where she transformed back into her human form.
After fixing her clothes and hair, Merrick stepped out of the shadows quietly and walked down the path the led to the shop named Rabbit’s Foot. It was a simple little teashop that the vampire had been going to for quite some time now, ordering their different blends of tea depending on her mood for the night. Her long ponytail swayed behind her as she silently and gracefully strode towards the entrance, lifting her hand towards the door to gently rap on the door to announce her presence before pushing it open to walk in. She hopes the owner had not closed shop yet.
"Closing time!" The cheery voice of certain silver haired girl rang out as she clapped her hands together, gently humming. It was amazing how less meek and timid she was within the walls of her own shop/home {and alone}. She pushed her bangs out of her face as she took her usual little yellow clip that held them together on the counter as she let out a soft breath. The small shop was filled with various herbs and leaves. Many were for medical or cooking purposes, some were for the scent {like incenses}, a few for charms, and then a whole section dedicated for tea leaves{which were also herbs}. Despite being filled with so many plants and scents, the shop was organized and held a relaxing and nice smelling air to it. Honestly, how relaxed and at home this place made her feel was one of the reasons she loved the shop.
Walking over to a broom that had been resting against the wall off to the sidelines, Alise grasped it, about to tidy up the place a little before heading on upstairs. Typically, the little shop closed earlier now due to the fact that it was only being ran by one person. It wasn't exactly the busiest shop to begin with, so it didn't hinder her really. But, she did choose a few certain days of the week where she'd let it stay open later for their more nightly oriented guests.
Really, Alise didn't have to run the shop. Given their long life spans, her grandmother had saved up quite a bit that was passed down to her when she had passed. She could've live off of it and get a regular, less taxing job but..she liked the little dainty shop and...she felt as though it would be honoring her grandmother's wishes in keeping it running as long as she could. It was old - really old. But...it was the first ever 'home' she had really ever had.
For a moment, Alise had stopped her sweeping, a small smile coming to her lips. That's right...this was her home...
The sound of knuckles on a door was what caught her attention, and she turned, the soft chimes that were on the door lightly bumping into one another as it was opened.
Smiling, Alise gently dipped her head. "Welcome to Rabbit's Foot! I was just about to close up, but I'd be more than happy to - O-oh, hello," she trailed off upon seeing it was a customer she knew - Merrick. Although she knew the woman's name and that she was a vampire...that was about it. Still, it was nice to have a familiar face pop in. Brushing herself off, she briefly looked at the woman before looking elsewhere - she was never one to hold gazes. "Is there anything I can get for you?" When she was on her job it was the few occurrences when her timidness dropped by just a smidgen. It was bad business to be afraid to speak to your customers after all!
....It only took a few months of her grandmothers 'training' to even manage to do such a thing. And that was just to greet people, let alone provide them her service. Otherwise though, she had definitely improved!

As soon as she stepped inside the shop, strong earthy scents hit her keen nose. It was overwhelming all at once, but Merrick was able to distinguish each and every kind if she were to focus on each. The scent of lavender was the strongest, followed by lemon and mint, then finally jasmine. There were other scents that mingled with those she emphasized on, though she can assume that those were the ones used for medicine and other things. It was like a festival of aromas playing with her senses and the vampire will have to say that it was one of the more pleasant scents she will not mind inhaling all the time.
The building itself was also fitting for such colorful aromas; it was one of Merrick’s earlier designs and was erected by the hands of the workers who were hired by her father’s construction firm. It was simple, a little rustic but homey, as requested by the client. She could not recall every person who had contacted her to design and build their homes and facilities, though going back to each one allowed the vampire to remember some details. Like this particular shop, she had known the owner as a kindly old woman, though she can only wonder where she was today.
She momentarily paused on the spot as she closed the door behind her then gave a polite nod and a gentle smile towards the current manager of the shop, a female Usagimimi named Alise Valestine. The young girl was a hard worker, though Merrick does not know much about her, save that she knows her herbs and tea well. She did feel bad when the rabbit girl said that she was almost closing up, but her arrival halted that.
“Allow me to express my sincerest apologies for coming in so late, Miss Valestine. I didn’t mean to be a bother, but I could not help but want some of your tea.”
The vampire’s tone was clearly apologetic, her tone tinged with a faint Russian accent all thanks to her mother teaching her about her native tongue. Being a regular, Merrick does make up for her last minute appearance by leaving a ridiculously huge tip for the girl; money was not a problem for this woman. She moved forward and placed a hand upon her front, adding to her earlier statement, “I promise I won’t stay long, but can I perhaps have something to calm the nerves and relieve some stress?”
Merrick’s golden orbs were locked at the silver-haired girl, despite the meek one not meeting her gaze at all. The owner, as she had observed for some time, had a shy streak about her and she can understand perfectly well if she was a little uneasy with her around. The sound of her boots against the floor softly echoed between them as she placed a hand upon one of the chairs that were settled in the shop, patiently waiting for the other one to answer.
❝O-Oh! Please don't apologize! I understand our...differences...with the whole...uhm..." Alise trailed off, a slight red tint coming to her cheeks as she cleared her throat, fidgeting slightly. "I-I didn't mean it like that, I mean vampires and usagimimi are pretty similar a-and they....my apologies." She, thankfully, caught herself before she got too much into 'freak out' mode in trying to explain herself, which never went well and only winded up with her feeling even more embarrassed and frustrated.
She let out a breath, trying to calm her nerves and not lock up completely and revert into her 'so shy I can't talk' mode. Flashing a smile at the vampire, but seeming to still refuse to meet her gaze, her rabbit like ears notably perked up - a sign that she was keenly listening. A nod was given. "Stress relieving? Of course! There are quite a few different herbal teas for that but let me see..." She hummed softly, turning her back to the woman as she began to search the shelves.
Alise prided herself in the fact that she knew every herb and herbal tea within it. So it only took her a few moments as she looked on the counters where the different neatly packed boxes of tea were, each with their respective herb on display to show what they were. She stopped in front of where a lavender branch was, quickly taking out one of the little boxes. "Here we go! This is Lavender Tea. It's a bit sweet, a slightly minty flavor, but it's great for relieving stress, especially in woman. There's also Chamomile Tea, but, it tends to make people drowsy too, so I figured Lavender Tea would be better." Her soft voice rang out as she smiled shyly towards Merrick. "I...hope this will be good enough? I-If not, there are plenty of other tea blends I can give you!"

For a moment, Merrick tilted her head as she watched the rabbit girl stutter out her words when answering her. The vampire really had to wonder, was she really that scary or intimidating? Contrary to the belief that vampires do not have reflections (because they have no souls and are evil), the woman can attest that she looked like any other ordinary human out there; the only things that made her stand out were her unusually pale and cold skin and her bright gold eyes. Everything else looked normal on her that she actually passed as a girl in her twenties, the age she was frozen in.
Once Alise managed to gather her bearings and proceed to get the tea, the vampire silently moved around the chair she was holding onto earlier and sat down. Merrick would say something but held back her tongue, not wanting to distract the girl as she sifted through the whole selection of herbs they got. She did keep her eye on the rabbit girl, seeing how precise her movements were when she was doing her job compared to when she was around people. Perhaps she was truly painfully shy around people so she acts a little nervous and stutters when they were around?
Once the younger of the two females had chosen, the vampire looked at her then at the box she held. Lavender, was it? Merrick cannot recall having it before, so maybe it would be a good time to try it out? Alise did mention that it was good for relieving stress and the other tea she mentioned, Chamomile, might make her sleepy which was a no-no, not when night time was the only time she was active. She smiled at the girl and replied, “Lavender is fine, Miss Valestine. I will try anything for once. I do trust in your choice when it comes to tea.”
Merrick then settled on the chair and brought out her phone to check some of her messages. It will all be from her firm anyway, just another annoyance to mind. The vampire rubbed her temple, trying to soothe a possible coming headache.
Alise perked up considerably at Merrick's kind words. It was honestly just too...cute. The way her floppy rabbit ears perked up to the small blush that came on her cheeks and the shy smile to her lips. Why, if she were a dog supernatural of some kind, her tail might even be wagging! Her nose did give a few little twitches - similar to that of a rabbit - a habit of hers when she was happy. However, the moment abruptly stopped as she tore her gaze away from Merrick, clearing her throat delicately. "You're too kind, miss," she spoke softly, but, there was no denying that Merrick's words had pleased the rabbit girl.
As she went over to the register to check out the item and neatly place it into the cute little bags she and her grandmother had custom designed in the past, her blue eyes briefly flickered over to the vampire woman. She had faintly caught the sight of temple rubbing. Was she annoyed? For a moment, Alise felt her heart quicken in her chest, perhaps starting to go into a mini panic Had she done something to upset the woman already? About to apologize in a splurge of words, she, thankfully, bit down on her tongue, forcing herself to think. Judging from the way Merrick was looking at her phone, it must've been something else. Not her.
'Thank goodness...' Alise nearly wanted to let out a breath of relief as her tensing chest seemed to finally relax. Instead, she focused on carefully tying a ribbon around the small tea box. She thought it was a cute way to package the little boxes...and...she liked tying ribbons.
Either way, she found herself speaking up, surprisingly enough. "Is...Is everything alright, Miss Merrick?" I-if you don't mind me asking," she said, flinching slightly. She really hoped she wasn't being nosy...it was just...well, she was sorta sensitive to these things.

It brought a brief smile to her face as she watched Alise react to her statements. Ah, Usagimimi can be such precious little creatures with how their ears just perk up like that. Merrick just had to see that faint nose twitch with her keen eyesight, was that a bunny response? It did not take long before the girl tore her gaze away from the vampire again and she allowed the shop owner to do her job for now.
She dreaded opening her inbox but she knew she had to. After taking a quick breath, Merrick tapped the screen and was greeted by the sight of eleven unread messages. Eight were from work which she did not find surprising though most of them revolved around the some materials not yet being delivered and the needed meeting with the client because of the possible delay on their hands. It was not good news when it comes to construction; delays mean a lot of wastage in money and it was something unacceptable for the vampire. However, it was something she cannot control so she made the necessary arrangements for the client meeting, hoping that they can still save this project. She sighed out as she moved onto the next three messages.
Two were from college, simple texts from her classmates about a rescheduled consultation in a class. It was informative and Merrick was quick to reply her thanks. The last was from her parents, coming from the phone of her mother. It was just a quick hello and a message saying that they miss their only daughter, wondering if she can come visit them in Britain one of these days. Ah, if only she could but not while there was work to be done and college to attend to. A faint smile curled up on her lips as she typed out her message for them and she was soon sending it back, hoping they can feel how much she misses them too and how apologetic she was that she cannot fly to them yet.
Merrick then looks up from her phone when she heard the rabbit girl ask her whether anything was wrong. After giving her a weak smile, the woman locked her phone and replied, “I’d be lying if I said if things are okay. It’s just some problems with work, Miss Valestine. The delivery of materials was delayed at the site; the client won’t be too pleased with that.” It was surprising she actually said the truth when she would normally hold back on details. Either way, she already spilled the beans so there was no way she can hold back much now, right?
“The construction business can be a stressful thing at times, but it is something I cannot let go of.” Merrick continued as she expertly spun her phone upon her hand, idly playing with it. She then stopped for a moment and looked at the girl with her golden gaze before she asked, “How about you, Miss Valestine? Do you ever get this stressed with your job here in your shop?”
