With the last of her class already over, Merrick finally felt free as she carried her books and bag while walking out of the classroom. As soon as she stepped out of the corridors, she made a beeline towards her locker to put away her things. She need not focus too much on the combinations, her hands automatically turning the dial before she lightly gave the locker door a pound, causing it to open. The vampire neatly stacked a number of her books in there while taking out what seemed to be a letter of sorts. Her nose caught the faint scent of perfume on the folded sheet, musky like those men’s cologne, so she assumed it was from some male admirer. The vampire did open it up, read the lines of love and admiration before confirming it was indeed from some Nephilim male. Shaking her head, the woman sighed out and began to tear apart the letter and pretty much the man’s heart if he saw that scene. She crumpled up the ripped pieces before slamming her locker shut and walking off, dumping the letter in the trash as she walked.
Merrick had always made it clear that she was not interested in dating, or if ever she did give it another shot, she would choose a female over a male anytime. The vampire was also open when it comes to her attraction to the same gender, though people still tend to ignore this detail about her. Still, she never led anyone on and tried to continue normally with her everyday life. She had more important matters to focus on, like those upcoming tests they will have soon and how to balance that with the work she was handling.
She led a busy life and she has her priorities straight. The woman then heard the ringtone of her phone, making her reach for it inside her bag and immediately answer it when she saw it was someone from work. Merrick went on her way, talking in a discreet manner on the speaker about business and such, when a group of jocks came through the corridor making so much noise. The female had to duck out of the way and move out of the building as she apologized to the caller on the other end, her feet leading her to the auditorium building.
It was fairly quiet in this building; most likely classes were still going on or maybe there were just a few college students there right now. She decided to look around as she finalized her transaction with her caller, finally saying her goodbyes and dropping the call. Merrick soon stumbled upon the theater room wherein a lone grand piano was set on the stage. She passed through the doors and walked her way towards the stage, easily jumping on the platform before walking over to the instrument.
Merrick’s fingers touched the cool ebony and ivory keys before she looked around. No one was present; the theater itself was bare of people so it would not hurt if she tried her hand on the piano, right? The vampire silently slid onto the seat and lightly touched the keys once more, inhaling and exhaling a few times before her fingers started to play. It did not take long before the female began to weave notes in the air and play a mellow piece. She immersed herself in the music, as if she was listening to the story being told by the music.
She was too focused on the music that she did not realize that she left the theater doors slightly open, allowing the sound of music to drift off into the corridor outside for anyone to hear.
Kaito is a flirtatious merfolk shifter that enjoys the company of others. He's a social butterfly and is unafraid to strike up a conversation with some random person. His goal in life is to become a licenced psychiatrist and work to improve people's mental health.
The time of day was insignificant. Right now Kaito was sharing a laugh with a fellow classmate. The couple walked out of their Anthropology class and stepped into the flooded hallway. The two continued to chat, the other guy discussed his major and how he planned on becoming a world traveller that documented the diversity among different cultures. It was fascinating to meet people from different backgrounds that planned on pursuing such a unique career in their life. Kaito explained his own dream, emphasizing his fascination with the human brain and stated how he planned to help people with mental illness. They exchanged a few more jokes about their current situation, a random guy dancing in the yard outside or a girl dressed up as a chicken handing out flyers for the ABC party during the weekend. Once they hit the major intersection the two parted, Kaito waved his departure before watching his friend disappear into the sea of people that followed.
He hummed softly to himself. Next class was statistics, but today he wouldn't be attending. Kaito decided during his Anthropology class that he would skip today's stat class. It wouldn't be a big deal since the statistics class was pretty much a mirror image of his senior high math class, which was still embedded freshly in his brain. Instead he pondered about the type of food he would get before leaving campus. Of course it would have to be something spicy so it really was just a matter of what he felt like drenching in hot sauce. He didn't want to follow the sea of people that rhythmically swam through the corridors, instead he would wait on the sidelines until the halls were empty. This would give him time to think about what meal he would consume later on.
Kaito put in his earbuds, drowning out the roaring of the sea among him. He began people watching. There was a notable amount of cute boys and girls that would pass him. He would bless them with a smile or a wink as they passed by, sometimes it flustered the recipient, other times it was just ignored. It never bugged him if someone didn't reciprocate his kind gesture. He often used flirting as an act of kindness rather than a suggestive action. Obviously some people didn't get that, instead putting up their defence mechanism (mostly from the men) and occasionally giving Kaito a dirty look. Once the sea tides had died down, Kaito slowly picked himself up, stretching in the process. He accidentally pulled out his earbuds while his arms stretched over his head, causing them to fall to his sides. Kaito slowly began to reach for the cord before he started to hear a faint tune echoing through the halls. He gathered the cording and began to wrap them together and shove them in his pocket. Kaito, with a bemused expression, began walking towards the source of the noise. The closer he got the more prominent the tune and instrument being used became. He noted that it was on a piano and the source of the noise was coming from the auditorium.
This tune... This song... It was incredibly familiar to him. As he stood just before the door that was slightly agape, he was able to distinguish what song was being played. He would recognize this song from anywhere. His mother used to always play this exact tune when it was snack time. The nostalgia began to overpower him and he just had to know who was creating such beautiful music. It had been so long since he last heard this song. If Kaito himself was capable enough to play the piano he would no doubt try to dominate this song.
He slowly crept open the door, making sure not to disturb the pianist at work. His legs guided him into the auditorium and he silently shuffled his way inside, getting closer to the stage with each step. Kaito's crimson orbs flashed with ecstasy, he felt nothing but bliss. The overwhelming happiness in his body made him unconsciously walk closer to the piano, his eyes never wavering from the pianist. He watched as her fingers danced along the keys, not missing a single note. Kaito froze once she had finished, his thoughts currently incoherent.
"That was astonishing." He blurted out. Kaito hadn't even realized that he had spoken for a split second. Once he recollected his thoughts, he continued, hoping to not come off as creepy. "I'm sorry but I couldn't help but hear your music from the hall," he paused as his eyes trailed along the female, "I wanted to see if the pianist was just as beautiful as the music they played." He smirked. "I was correct." He finished. Regardless of his naturally flirty words, the music she produced was amazing. Kaito truly believed that she had harnessed immense power just from being able to play so beautifully. He's never seen anyone else play the piano other than his mother, so just listening to another person play made him feel like the innocent child he once was. "However I must apologize for intruding." He bowed his head, his expression more sincere this time. Kaito pushed up his glasses that had fallen slightly on his face.
She looked like a woman who would understand his appreciation for the piece. Although he couldn't directly see her face, she emitted an emotional aura from the song. He couldn't help but be drawn in by such beauty.

gotta stay high all my life to forget i'm missing you
Nimble fingers played across the ebony and ivory keys effortlessly as the female went on to make music. It took her several years to actually learn how to play the piano and read notes but it took longer for her to be able to play with emotion. Her parents complimented her in the past that she already had the mastery in playing the instrument but she lacked something, that her pieces felt cold and lifeless. Merrick wondered what it was, until her mother gave her a hint when she played for her daughter. She never thought that emotion was vital when playing so she set them aside and focused on concentrating on the notes and nothing more.
She gave it a shot and the vampire felt free as her fingers danced over the keys. The weight of aiming for excellence left her and the desire to just tell your emotions through the music was more than enough to let her weave through the song with relative ease. Merrick was able to carry this through anything she played, not just on the piano but with the other instruments she also knew. The song she played had her thinking back to the times when she was still happy with her first love, thinking of how they met and how everything just fell into place with her. It was a memory the immortal cherished so dearly that it put a smile to her face as she played on the piano.
However, Merrick knew that everything she had with her first love came crumbling down when the woman she loved died. Everything came to a crashing halt for the vampire when that happened but she had to move on, but each and every time, the cycle repeats itself for her. Maybe love was just like that, it can be a wonderful feeling to have but it can have its own thorns that hurt too. Still, she tried to push away those thoughts and focused on the more pleasant memories which aided in putting more emotion in the piece which was soon coming to its close. It did not take long before she tapped the last of the notes and her hands slowly lifted from the piano, letting the fading music echo inside the auditorium…
…only to realize she was not alone anymore.
Someone was speaking to her as soon as the music had faded in the air and the woman almost froze in surprise. She remained in her spot, her hands gripping the edge of the piano as her eyes discreetly darted towards the auditorium doors. Did she leave those open? Maybe she left them ajar, which would lead to anyone curious enough to check inside. Ah well, nothing can be done about that now.
Exhaling a breath, Merrick closed her eyes for a moment before she opened them once more then turned in her seat to see her one-man audience. A red-headed male, most likely another college student, was there not from where she sat and the woman had to hold herself back from furrowing her brow at his flirty words. If his intention was merely to trifle with her, then he chose the wrong person to do that. Either way, the female will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just his way of speaking. The vampire will be courteous towards him since he seemed to enjoy the music.
Merrick shook her head and lightly smiled at the male, her eyes looking him over as she spoke, “No need for apologies. This auditorium is for everyone here in the college and anyone is free to walk in and out of here, just like what I did.” She stayed seated on the piano chair as she nodded politely in return to him while adding, “Though I’m glad you enjoyed that little show; it’s proof that there are still people who enjoy the classical genre, no?”

Thankfully, the woman wasn't uptight and understood that his eyes needed to be graced with the image of the pianist the same way his ears were fed with a beautiful melody. Kaito grinned, noticing how she tensed up at first when hearing his voice. She obviously did not intend for anyone to find her playing, but she did not become irritated when finding out about his presence. "That is true. Thankfully with such public rules, I was able to come face to face with a talented artist that not only plays the piano but is also emotionally immersed with the music she performs." He spoke softly, his voice trailing off every so often to rethink about this present experience.
It wasn't until Kaito looked directly into the woman's eyes that he met with a connection he had never encountered. Her eyes... They resembled his mother's so well. His eyes widened slightly. He had to keep his composure. Kaito was easily influenced by his spontaneous nature to just jump on the first thing that popped into his mind but he needed to remain calm. No use in scaring the woman off with his own personal memories.
Although Kaito was more of a classic rock guy himself, he enjoyed listening to classical instruments like the piano, violin and even harp. There was something so intriguing about music that didn't need words to express emotion. It was a beautiful form of art that lacked proper appreciation. Such a pity."I hope the recognition for the genre's beauty continues to grow. It's a shame that people forget the basis of any song; instruments." He spoke in an almost irritated tone. It was as if the thought of people brushing off traditional music was a sin in itself.
Wanting to discard the exasperation he felt in the pit of his stomach, he started to guide the conversation."My name is Kaito. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance my love." He purred while kneeling down on one knee, taking her hand in his and delicately kissing the back of it. As soon as his hand was graced with her fair touch, he noticed how cold her skin was. It wasn't just normal cold... It was inhumanly cold. Could she be a Vampire? "Excuse me if this sounds rude to ask but," He hesitated, hoping this was not going in the wrong direction, "Are you a Vampire? I only ask because it would be so honourable to be in the presence of one!" Kaito's eyes lit up as he stood. This would be a wonderful experience if he was what he suspected. If not, then it would be incredibly awkward to pursue their conversation any further. It would sure explain a lot of her external features. The fair skin, her divine beauty, those endearing eyes... She truly looked like a masterpiece brought to life. Was it so wrong of him to admire her beauty? The breath-taking music she played alongside her stunning appearance, she was the perfect weapon to make anyone weak in the knees.

gotta stay high all my life to forget i'm missing you
From what the male said, he had a point; nowadays, people just crank up their music which the vampire thought did not really make sense. Merrick tried to find meaning in their lyrics but the recurring theme she can get from them was their so-called love for someone, drugs and sex. She found them shallow and sometimes, her ears would hurt from the unnecessary heavy bass some artists put in their songs. This was the only time her enhanced hearing gave her a disadvantage. If only people would go back to the basics, as the stranger said. There was something soothing when it comes to listening to just instruments. Despite the absence of words, this music can speak volumes.
Going back to her present thoughts, Merrick quickly blinked when the male took her hand and kissed the back of it as he introduced himself. It was a gesture of the old days, of the gentlemen greeting a lady for the first time. The vampire had been used to these kinds of things, having lived for almost three centuries. While it was not a common thing to do during the present times, this young man named Kaito was bold enough to do against the grain, she will have to admit. It was still a polite gesture after all.
Just when she was about to pull her hand away from Kaito’s hold, his query somewhat threw her off. Well, it was to be expected since he did touch her and her skin temperature was not even close to normal. She was not sure how to feel that time, though his expression that was of awe when he guessed her species almost made the woman chuckle. It was almost like before her was a child who saw something interesting for the first time. Her mouth curled up into a friendly smile and just to show that Kaito got his assumption correctly, she allowed her fangs to marginally peek through her lips. Her hand maneuvered itself in his hold, shifting to that of a handshake, firm but still gentle.
“Save the endearments for your beloved, Kaito. You may call me Merrick and yes, you are right to guess that I am a vampire.”
While Merrick had not shown any signs of aggression towards this man, so hopefully, he does not have a bad impression on her kind. Was his expression genuine or just a ploy? After shaking his hand, the woman pulled hers away and asked him in a somewhat deceiving honeyed tone, “I hope you’re not thinking that you’re in a dangerous position right now just because you are with a so-called ‘bloodsucker’.” What a degrading name for vampires. She placed a hand upon her front and retained her placid smile as she added teasingly, “Worry not, I don’t bite… well, not all the time.”

He felt the touch on his hand shift, their contact turned into a traditional handshake. Kaito softly gripped, not wanting to bend the delicate flower in his grasp. Although he did appreciate the firm hold she had. Her voice was almost as smooth as his, except her words did not dance with affection. "My beloved is love itself, such misfortune for someone like myself." He chuckled. Of course he referred to his flirtatious nature. Although he had a suave tongue, it made relationships tough for him to get into. Most people just thought he was playful and preferred to get with as many people as possible. This caused him to be avoided at times since most didn't want to get hurt. However he was far from being the playboy that he was pegged as. A hopeless romantic forever stuck in the realm of insincerity and caution built from his peers. But he was not here to pity himself, no, not in front of a woman.
"Merrick." His voice chimed softly, echoing the name she had given. It was unique, the first he has heard. Kaito couldn't help but smile when she confirmed his assumption. A vampire. Right in front of his eyes! Incredible. "I could never feel in danger while in the presence of a woman like you. If I did, wouldn't I be stereotyping all vampires?" Of course it would be natural for most people to feel a bit on edge in his position. But even after her confession and showcasing her fangs, he couldn't help but continue to feel excited. "Of course, I would not blame you if you did bite me. I'd undoubtedly be delicious." Kaito couldn't help but let out a laugh. Maybe the joke was made too many times to her but, it was new for him so he tested it out.
Kaito's mind began to come back to her piece. He wondered all her experience with instruments, considering how Vampires are immortal and all. She must have had all the time in the world to practice. This also made him curious about the forbidden question. Her age. Of course Kaito wondered how old she was. But he would never ask anyone their age. He sooner them tell him. Kaito believed that age didn't really matter in friendships. If you make a connection with someone before knowing their age, why not pursue the friendship even after finding out? The person doesn't change just because of the number of years they've been living. Instead he made a different approach. "So how long have you been playing piano?" He asked. Kaito remembers his mother telling him that she played the piano since she was a little girl. She grew up finding happiness through the music and so she continued to learn and play. Especially with Merrick's excessive amount of talent, she must have been playing for a long time as well.
