Fray has long since lost a lot of enthusiasm that they once held for the world. They often appear simply bored and uncaring about everything happening around them and usually this assumption isn't wrong. They are incredibly obedient and will follow most orders, a remnant of their past life. They also often follow people around if they find said person interesting enough, this following is not unlike stalking.Fray does enjoy hearing about new things, but for the most part they saw it all coming. The world travels in circles and time repeats itself and they've seen an awful lot of time. They do, however, enjoy listening to other people talk and writing. They aren't a fan of talking with others, but listening is always interesting. People are the only thing that constantly change. Even the people who are similar are different in some small way. Sometimes they can be a little clingy and might end up following people until they die, but usually they don't gain too strong of connections towards anybody. Mostly they are just always bored. Nothing is new to them and no matter how much they are looking for something new and interesting they can never seem to find it.
history
warning for homophobia, death, and abuseWhat's an agender child to do?
The twelfth century wasn't exactly a forgiving place for Fray. They were born male and although they always felt this wasn't exactly right, there was nothing for them to say at the time. They were male in the eyes of everybody they knew and even their own self at the time couldn't come up with a proper word to identify theirself by.
They were born a servant in England and grew up alongside one of the lord's sons. Fray was the son's own personal servant and always did everything they were told, never truly knowing anything other than obedience. They were luckier than some of the others in the household and, later in their life, more unfortunate than others.
As time went by the lord's son grew older and he grew meaner and angrier at life. This anger translated to him getting physical when some of the servants did something wrong, but he never hadn't harmed Fray yet.
The lord's son wasn't nice, that was clear, but until Fray and the boy were fourteen Fray didn't find this out. They were at one of the son's sword fighting classes when he stabbed another servant who was supposed to be helping with the training. Fray was horrified, but the boy just seemed to be indifferent to the whole thing, as if it wasn't a big deal. One servant died while they had to just go right back to being unwavering in their obedience and loyalty.
For the next few months there were a few more instances of the lord's son harming other servants. He was never punished though, and every time Fray had to pretend like it didn't bother them.
Then he turned seventeen and the lord's son decided that it was time to confess something to Fray. He came to their chambers one night, which was incredibly rare, and told them that he loved them. They didn't have a lot of options in the situation. They could say no and risk the wrath that would surely come from turning him down, or they could lie and say that they had feelings that they didn't. So that's what they did.
The boy would pull Fray away from their work so that they could meet in secluded corners of manor. They were dreading working with the boy, but it was pretty much their only job as his personal servant. Their performance in their servant job dropped because their new job seemed to be making sure the lord's son was pleased.
Then came the suitors. The son of a lord had to be married to a woman in power so the lord set up meetings for his son and each time the son left to travel around a meet these women he took Fray with him. It was posed as a faithful servant going along with his master, but really it was a boy taking his lover with him to meet a possible future wife. It was one of the only times that Fray was allowed to leave the manor.
Finally the boy found a wife and an engagement part was to be held. At this point Fray was reaching the age of nineteen and had been having this strange affair with the boy for two years. The party was planned, a masquerade ball, and Fray was allowed to go as a guest instead of just as a servant. The boy even got them a fancy tuxedo to wear.
Fray was excited for the first time in a while and even made their own mask for the party. The night of the party they had one of the female servants to their hair and even their makeup, despite the fact that they would be wearing a mask and this makeup wouldn't be seen.
The party was already very active when they got into the ballroom and they found it easy to blend into the crowd and avoid the man of the hour and his bride-to-be. Fray danced with many of the ladies in attendance, knowing that it would be improper to dance with the men there while so many were watching. They wished it wasn't that way.
Near the end of the night they were at the drink table when they felt a hand lightly trail across their back. They turned to find the newly engaged boy. Once again Fray was pulled away from what they were doing to go with the boy for what he wanted. He was speaking about how he couldn't find them all night and then when they were alone in a room away from the people the space between them was closed rather quickly.
The mask they had made was thrown aside and as their kissing got more passionate Fray grew more and more uncomfortable with what was happening. It wasn't anything new, but this time the boy was in line to be married, so in many was it was new.
Fray pushed the boy away and asked why he wanted to be in this relationship. The boy was confused. His answer was because he didn't want to be with a woman and wanted to be with men. Fray furrowed their eyebrows in thought as the boy brought them closer to kiss them again. A hand trailed lower.
Once again Fray pushed him off and admitted what they had been thinking their entire life. That they didn't think that they were a man exactly. The boy scoffed and started kissing Fray again, but they no longer felt like they could keep up the charade of being in love with this boy when they just weren't, so they pushed him away for a final time and explained that they didn't want to continue with this relationship anymore.
There was a beat of pure silence and then suddenly Fray was on the ground and the boy was on top of them delivering punch after punch to them. They struggled to get out from under the boy, to get away from the pain they were feeling, but the larger boy had them securely pinned.
Then the door opened and in came the boy's fiancé. She asked what he was doing and the boy growled that Fray had just tried to kiss him. She glared down at Mars, who was now bleeding in a few different places, and spat out how disgusted she was at them. She motioned for the boy to continue and he did.
By the time the two from the newly engaged couple left the room and left Fray, they felt like they could probably just curl up and die. Their face was more black and blue than it was anything else, and the rest of their body was probably just as bad.
They started sobbing at some point and after a few hours of that and the immense pain subsided they forced theirself to stand and looked around. The pain exploded anew as they walked over to where their mask had been thrown during the make out session and put it back on.
The next year was multiple layers of hell for Fray. They were still the man's servant, but now instead of pulling them away to kiss he would just slap them in the middle a crowded room, or smash their forehead into a stone wall. Eventually even the man's wife joined in on it.
Fray even started feeling embarrassed about the way their face looked on a daily basis. They always had bruises and black eyes and slit skin and they decided to wear a mask one day to cover this up. It made them feel safer for some reason and for the next month they wore the mask while they did their chores. It was almost as if the abuse quieted while they wore the mask. It was nice for a while.
One day they were sweeping the stone steps of the manor when they felt two pairs of hands push them forward. The world shifted around them as they tumbled down the marble staircase and cracked their neck on the way down.
They woke up as a spirit.
Fray wasn't sure what to do, so for the longest time they just wandered around the estate. The only time they had left was to go see the women in other countries with the boy and aside from that they had never been off the property.
For a long time they watched the boy and his wife grow older, unsure what else to do other than watch over the ones who had killed them. Fray gazed on as the man and woman grew apart and then a similar abuse began to be forced upon the woman, until she was with child, then it stopped. It started again, she had another child, it stopped. Their relationship was like a wheel of abuse.
Eventually Fray decided that they should probably leave and go find theirself instead of just living off the energy of the man who had apparently loved them once before he killed them. It was hard to leave, but the man was old now and he had long forgotten about them. There had been many other men with whom he had laid. Fray left the day the man died.
For hundreds of years they traveled around the world, growing stronger in what they could achieve as a spirit and learning new things along the way. In the beginning every new thing amazed them and brought them immense joy, but after they had traveled the world for three hundred years they found that nothing surprised them anymore.
They were forgetting what their life had been like when they were alive and they were forgetting what it felt like to be alive. So they started writing everyday and kept a journal for each day of their life. Electricity came along and they were interested for a short time, writing it down. The cars and telephones and televisions that came after interested them for a short time, but soon everything just felt so mundane, and still they wrote everyday.
Eventually, they heard a word that made their entire being feel different. Agender. That was what they were. For hundreds of years they had known they weren't exactly male, or female, but had never had a name for it. Then there it was, agender. Fray felt better and wrote this journey down, but then even after a few years the excitement of that faded too.
Their life was getting too repetitive. They were a hamster running in a wheel. When they heard about the town of monsters they figured that they might just fit right in and so they made their way over to Kinau and made theirself the resident spirit and ended up just kind of lurking around the town and taking a record on what happened.
misc.
•they actually never take off their mask and if anybody tries to insist that they take it off they usually just flat out refuse or walk away.•They never try too hard to hide theirself from people and also don't usually possess people unless they are allowed to.
•Sometimes they slip back into their English accent when they get excited or speak for long periods of time, both of which are incredibly rare.
•They can speak nine different languages, English, French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Afrikaans, Swedish, and Portuguese. They also know sign language. They love learning new languages and a fast way to make them like you is speaking a different language with them other than English.
•Fray is asexual and doesn't feel romantic or sexual attraction.
•They literally own their own library just to keep their journals in. A few of their more interesting journals have published to make money.
•Their head always tilts slightly to one side, unless they make a conscious effort to change this.
