He was quite the happy child, always pulling pranks on the other kids in the village and making the most bizarre jokes. Oliver was the class clown during his time in school. The teachers would sometimes be frustrated with his outbursts but he never got into any serious trouble. His biggest interest was in the constellations above. To Oliver, it was fascinating that the sky they were currently looking at was the same sky that people saw thousands of years ago. One time, when he and his buddies were playing on the outskirts of the village, they all noticed how particularly beautiful the sky looked with a full moon. They all promised that day that they would remain the best of friends for the many years ahead of them. His friend group wasn't the most popular in the village. There was this group of older kids that would constantly pick on them. Oliver took it upon himself to be the strong among his group and always comfort anyone that fell victim to their teasing. There was one girl in his group, her name was Lilian but they called her Lily, and she seemed to get it the worst. Oliver would favour her in particular. She was the sweetest, most kind soul he had ever met and it just baffled him with how she was the one they picked on most. There was a time on the weekend where he took Lilian, alone, to the special spot that he and his buddies all called their personal fort. He had crafted her a necklace from trees and flowers and carved "BFF" into the locket. He promised that he would protect her no matter what. Oliver never had a romantic interest in the girl, he just felt responsible for keeping her safe and happy. After that the two were inseparable. They came as a package deal. The bullying had become more bearable for Lilian since Oliver would often throw some witty insults in the bullies direction, causing them to get flustered and angrily leave her alone. It wasn't long until the two shared their little "secrets" with one another. Oliver admitted to being a Phoenix and she told him about her as a Merfolk. They were still just children, but they thought the idea of them being different species was incredible. They pinky swore to not tell anyone. Unfortunately, while they had this secret conversation, one of the bullies had been spying on them. He ran back and told the rest of his clan and they soon started to devise a plan. On a gloomy day, one that had plenty of showers and absolutely no sunshine, Oliver was forced to stay home by his parents. As a Phoenix, he was weak to the cool rainy weather and so he had to spend the day indoors. He spent his time sewing a sweatshirt for Lilian with his mother upon his request. During his snack time he felt brave, and a little rebellious against his parents. How bad could rain be? So he snuck outside in the back and caught Lilian on her way home from school. Of course, the poor girl was concerned for his health but he reassured her that he felt nothing wrong. The two then spent their time splashing in puddles and singing silly nursery rhymes. Not long after Oliver began to feel sick, weak. They said their goodbyes and he retreated to his house where his parents impatiently waited. They scolded him for having disobeyed (Although they were not that surprised) and forced him to stay in his room the rest of the night. The following day was a scorcher. The sun beamed heavily on their village, it was almost unbearable for the normal villagers, especially Lilian as a merfolk. Due to Oliver's stupidity and stubbornness, he was sick the entire day. He had to stay home and miss another day of school since he could not get out of bed. Lilian went to school with their buddy group. She ended up falling behind as she was trying to pick up some lilies on the way to the school. When she was a little too far back, she was met with the bully group that patronized her constantly. They took her hostage and tied her up on a bench near the kids secret fort. They knew that since she was a merfolk that this would cause her to become incredibly weak. They left her out like this for hours. Once Oliver began to feel better he was released from his home. He snagged the sweater that him and his mother made for Lilian and ran to catch her coming home from school. He felt his health strengthen just from being in the sun, why could his parents just leave him out in the sun to get back to his normal self? Unfortunately, there was no sign of Lily. He knew that if she was not coming from her usual route then she would probably be in the fort with everyone else. Oliver went over to discover her tied up to the bench, passed out from heat exhaustion. He went and got his parents and they untied her from the bench, quickly taking her to the hospital not soon after. Oliver had never felt worse for not being there for Lily. She didn't wake up until that night and when she did, the doctors only came with bad news. Due to her long exposure to the sun, and her immense sensitivity to the rays, she had developed a severe sunburn that lead to a terrible infection. It had to do with where she was placed for the lenglthy amount of time It was devastating to find out about it, and it made Oliver feel the worst he ever has. She promised it was not his fault but it didn't make him feel any better. He had picked up the lilies she got, as they were laying next to her restrained body. He handed them over to her in the hospital bed but she refused and said that they were for him. Oliver took the lilies home and put them in a vase to keep. Every day he visited her, bringing her a fresh lily he had picked on his way to the hospital. He tried his best to maintain his silly front, hoping that making her laugh would cure her, even though he knew it wouldn't. It was on a beautiful, sunny day where destruction was soon to follow. He was now a young adult. Lilian had to go to the hospital for treatment on her condition every day. Oliver was going to visit Lily like he always did, only this time he was being followed by the group of bullies from middle school. How they did not grow out of this habit of picking on others was beyond him. Never had they tried to pick on Oliver, since he was always wittier than they, causing them to look like idiots in the end. But ever since Lily had been in serious condition, his ability to rebuttal any insults lacked. So they followed him, throwing insult after insult, blaming Lily's pain on him. It was an awful feeling. They now knew his weakness, the most vulnerable and sensitive part of him. It got to a point where it was too much for him. Oliver exploded with rage. His immense hatred for the others and overall guilt for Lily was eating him alive. His anger was too much, causing him to morph into his Phoenix form. During the transformation, there was a wave of fire that claimed his surroundings. The buildings around him began to catch flame, the people inside were unable to escape quick enough. People were burning to death before his eyes. It was so painful to watch but it had already been done. It wasn't until he began to cool down and the exhaustion he felt from release where he felt his gut drop. Oliver slowly morphed back into his human form. He instantly bolted towards the hospital. When he was in the vicinity, it was an awful sight to see that the hospital had also been caught in the mess. There were nurses and doctors rushing patients out but there surely wouldn't be enough time to get all of them. He ran inside to Lily's room, hoping that she was okay. When he entered the room, her body was covered in red and orange light. She wasn't moving. He had gotten there too late and there weren't enough nurses and doctors available to get her out in time. He ran to her body, picked it up and ran outside. He softly placed her on the ground and the flames started to die down. It was assumed that she had breathed in too much of the gas emitted from the fire and so she fell unconscious, the flame soon after taking her life with burns too severe to treat. No amount of words could describe the guilty he felt. Oliver ran, only to see his parents panicking in the village square, trying to desperately put out buildings that caught flame. Once they sensed his presence they took him away from the village. There were villagers rushing to the aid of those that escaped the burning buildings. They managed to prevent the fire from spreading anymore and some buildings were saved quickly enough to be fixed. However, he could not erase the infuriation from the faces of those that knew he started it. It was the expression of his parents that hurt the most. They looked disappointed in the young man. Months after the incident he moved to San Fransico to live with his aunt (Dad's sister). Her husband had died during the second World War while on the field and so she lived alone. Oliver began college in SF to become a computer engineer. He excelled in his classes, being the top student in each, but he didn't find happiness through it. It may be because he was still reliving through the pain he caused months ago but the path just didn't seem interesting. He decided to switch his major to astrology. Perhaps it was from the night that all his friends gathered under the stars that captivated him. He wasn't quite sure but Oliver sure felt a lot happier in it. Oliver was given a project for his astrophysics class where he had to go and map out the constellations on a specific night and bring back the results to study. He had to go way out of the city in order to be able to see the stars. There as a perfect lookout spot where he planned to accomplish the homework. It was the perfect day for him to go out since he would be killing two birds with one stone. The same night was suppose to be the launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union. Oliver would be able to see the launch and also map out the constellations. When he arrived at the area he was met with another man that held a camera. They introduced themselves, the other man's name being SØren Anderson. The two talked with one another, becoming familiar as they watched the launch together. Later on they started to grow closer as friends, Oliver finally having someone he could speak with other than his aunt. It was his first friend since his move to San Francisco. He later learned that SØren had a wife that was growing ill. Alzheimer's he said it was. It was awful for him to go through such a thing. It was then that SØren told Oliver the two would be moving to Hawaii since it was where his wife always wanted to go. They ended up parting ways when SØren and his wife moved. It was tragic for Oliver to lose a friend but it wasn't like he was dead. He was still living on the same planet as Oliver, and they would look up at the same sky every now and then. Later on during his classes, Oliver learned that there was a better astronomy course available in a town called Kinau. His next destination would be over in Hawaii, much like his friend. Oliver left his aunt's house and moved to Kinau where he would attend University to become an Astronomer. Right away it was instantly better than living in SF since the stars were actually visible from in town.
